Croatia-Slovenia Biking/Sightseeing Trip, Sept. 2-21,
2007
In
September a group of 20 Hikanbykers and friends went on
a cycling trip to Croatia, led by Arleen Sakamoto and
supported by Vermont Bike
Tours (VBT). Some of the group also went on to
Slovenia for a sightseeing extension. The Dalmatian
coast of Croatia is spectacularly beautiful, with clear,
bright blue water and endless vistas of its more than
1000 islands. The atmosphere along the coast is very
Mediterranean, especially the food, which consists
primarily of the freshest fish and shellfish you can
imagine, prepared very much in the Italian style. Our
trip started in Dubrovnik, a charming walled Medieval
town. For the bicycling portion we ferried to the
islands of Brac and Hvar, which are very hilly but with
charming villages. The cycling miles were few but
tough. During the final week nine of us drove in 3 cars
to Slovenia, where we visited Plitvice National Park,
Lake Bled, Skocjan caves, and the Lipizaner stud farm.
What a fabulous trip.
